TNLCX Race Recap - Major Taylor CX Weekend

The TNLCX squad finished up our 2016 cyclocross season in fine form on December 3rd and 4th at the Indy Cycloplex, which is home to the Marian University Cycling team and Major Taylor Velodrome. The weekend was the first time a UCI-C2 event has been held at the venue and was a draw for many professionals eager to get coveted UCI points that help earn them better starting positions throughout the year at events.

For TNL, we were looking forward to the final weekend to put in one last effort to seal the incredible season we've had. We were all dreading the long weekend in 40 degree temps as many of us had to start early in the morning and spend the entire day out in the cold as we waited for Josh to finish up with the last race of the day.

Each day we showed up by 7am, got some things setup at team camp, and began the warmup process before the 8am first race of the day where Andrew, Emily, and Marissa towed the line. From 8am until about 11:30a each day, TNLCX members raced lap after lap in the soft mud and around the challenging course that featured two distinctly different sections of course. One was technical and hilly and other was an all out flat power section in spongy and muddy grass swamp area. Saturday, things were soft and damp in the morning with drying conditions throughout the day, which really made for a great course by day's end. Sunday included dryer and faster course conditions for the early races, but as the afternoon came closer and the UCI races began, the rain started to come down and the course because sloppy and challenging for everyone. By the end of the races, you could barely identify each rider because of the wet mud that covered their kits, bikes, and faces. Each of them chilled to the bone and completely spent and ready for anything to warm them up. True epic cross conditions. It was fun to watch and I'm sure one to remember for racers.

TNLCX wrapped up 6 podiums on day one, including a UCI win for Josh Johnson on Saturday with a bike throw over the line to beat second place. A huge accomplishment for Josh and an incredible way to end the season for the team. Day two including another 5 podium spots for TNLCX. Emily, Dylan, Ed, and Sam all took home OVCX series overall podiums as well, which was beyond what we all thought would happen at the beginning of the season. For a team that set performance goals well below our fundraising, awareness, and team building goals, we're really grateful that our teammates had great performances as well.

We also had one of our biggest weekends when it came to support. We had so many new friends come by the tent to hangout, ask questions, and buy merchandise. We sold over $800 in gear that weekend, which is incredible given that most items were $20 or less. Thank you everyone for the support. It's a small thing, but we encouraged every time we saw riders racing in our socks by the end of the season. By the end of the weekend, we generated over $1,200 for our fundraising campaign through sales and donations, including a $250 check from them Marian University Cycling team in support of what we're doing as a team with cycling. Thank you, Dean, and the rest of the team. We're $4,200 into our $8000 goal and we still need some support. You can make a tax-deductible contribution here or you can stay tuned to our bike auction if you're interested in buying a sized Medium Giant TCX Advanced with SRAM Force and Zipp wheels. We've got two to sell.

This weekend was a fitting end to the season and leaves us with a lot of positive thoughts towards what TNL racing looks like in 2017 and eager to join everyone again next Cross season. Blessings as you celebrate the Holiday season and set your goals for 2017. We'll see you around road, MTB, and fondos until next season.
