OVCX Bloomingcross Recap

Cyclocross is here! For our second race into the OVCX Series, the TNLCX squad headed to Bloomington, Indiana! With 23 racers, a desire to get back at it, and love for cyclocross it was sure to be a fun day!

The great folks with Bloomington Velo put together another great course for the OVCX Bloomingcross race. Racers had to tackle a fast, very hot, bumpy course that not only pushed riders physically, but mentally as well. It is always a particularly challenging venue for most racers as everyone comes into the season with different fitness levels. Racers all day were having to deal with the yo-yo effect.

As the day went on, the first races progressed from a dewy course to a bone-dry dust bowl. Many of the TNL racers are in the first couple waves of the day and had some great racing and solid performances to show for it. Mark Miller was able to win the Men’s Cat 4 40+ and Ben Herbertz scored another podium in the Junior Boy’s 15-18 category showing that speed from the road racing all summer was still there.  Cary Smith, Marissa Doner, Kevin Johnson, Dave Bradway, and Eddie Krillenberger all raced in those early races and performed great as well.

After some more Juniors racing, the kid’s race took place where we had some young TNLCX representation! I think we could all be in agreement that these kids have less fear and more energy in a race then any of us in a day. Some could even give us a few lessons on dismounts and remounts! The Hoffman Bros only got of their bikes long enough to down a few mouthfuls of Goldfish all day, which is the the kid equivalent of a gel.

After the kid’s race, the increasingly faster fields of the day continued. Starting things off in the Men’s Cat 3 race, Corey Smith took a commanding win in not only his category, but the overall wave as well.  Ryan Haden, Nick Kintzel, and Dylan Curtis also had good rides on the day.

Next up was the Elite Women’s field where TNL racer Emily Leonard took to the start line in a very wide age range and highly talented group of women determined to leave their mark on the day. After a missed pedal on the start, Emily quickly moved to the front of the race from an early top 10 start. In a show of strength, she caught the leader and pushed on. Emily rode a great race and won the overall and individual category. It was evident that the training plan provided by a certain elite racer by the name of JoJoNofingers’ is working well.

In the final race of the day, nothing short of craziness would ensue! The increasing heat and humidity would challenge the Elite Men’s field even more than previous races. New TNLCX riders Ian McShane and Nick Beirne lined up for their second and debut weekend with the TNL squad. Unfortunately, veteran TNLCX ride Josh Johnson had suffered an injury the previous day and couldn’t take to the start to join the other two. At the start it was clear many riders were out to make their move and show their dominance. In the early laps Nick and Ian showed strong form on the day leading and staying a part of the lead group. After some previous back issues, Nick was forced to pull out, which put his day to a halt. Ian suffered from some not so comfortable stomach issues but didn’t let that stop him as he finished the day with still a solid performance.

As we reflect on the weekend we thank the great friends and fellow riders we get to join every weekend at the OVCX Series. We can’t wait to see everyone again in full strength at Valley View as many of the crew can’t quite make the haul to Lexington. See you soon!
